No one — NO ONE — is happy all the time.
We often have unrealistic expectations when it comes to our emotional life. We live in a world that values constant positivity and we feel like something is wrong with us if we are not positive and happy all the time. This is particularly true in work environments.
Life is filled with sad times, angry times, jealous times, fearful times, happy times. You do not have to be perfect in your emotions. Stop holding on to the desire to be happy all the time – it’s an expectation that’s unreal.
People often say to me, “You’re so happy. You’re so positive.” I try to be. But I also feel every emotion. This past year, I have felt a lot of fear and at times deep sadness. That’s normal. That’s human. That’s real.
Happiness is just one element of your life. You cannot feel the happiness without feeling and embracing every other emotion, too.
For today, give yourself permission to feel every emotion. Don’t hide them. Be sad if you want to be sad. Be angry if you want to be angry. Be afraid if you want to be afraid.
Give yourself permission to be human.
